ENCAP personal orbital escape system of the 1960's
American manned rescue spacecraft. Study 1970. The ENCAP encapsulated bailout-from-orbit concept consisted of a folded heat shield. The astronaut would exit his stranded spacecraft and strap into the seat.

Status: Study 1970. Gross mass: 266 kg (586 lb). Height: 1.40 m (4.50 ft). Span: 2.40 m (7.80 ft).

Then a gas-powered deployment system would unfold and rigidize the rib structure of the heat shield. The ENCAP was equipped with a parachute for recovery after re-entry. Mass per crew: 266 kg.

Crew Size: 1.
