Hyunmoo-1
Part of Nike Hercules
South Korean surface-to-aurface missile. South Korea displayed a modification of the Nike Hercules with a new monolithic single-engine solid propellant stage of South Korean manufacture. The modification had guidance changes allowing it to serve as a surface-to-surface missile.

AKA: Nike Hercules Korean modification. Payload: 500 kg (1,100 lb). Gross mass: 4,500 kg (9,900 lb). Height: 12.50 m (41.00 ft). Diameter: 0.79 m (2.59 ft). Span: 2.30 m (7.50 ft).

Hyunmoo-1 (NHK, Nike Hercules Korea) was the first ballistic missile developed by South Korea. In 1986, South Korea succeeded in a test-launch with a payload of 480 kg and a range of 180 km. The United States withheld export approval in 1990, requested technical information, from South Korea, and a promise not to develop missiles with a range over 180 km. After providing the US with the requested guarantees, South Korea started to produce a limited number of Hyunmoo missiles and under inspection of the United States until the production ended.

Hyunmoo "guardian angel of the northern skies" was developed by the Agency for Defense Development and was in service with the South Korean Army. The missile used a mobile launcher, controlled from a converted Nike battery control van. The two-stage missile used solid rocket motors and an inertial guidance and control system. It could be launched in any weather and self-guided after launch. The missile was approximately 12 m long, weighing 5 tons.

Maximum range: 400 km (240 mi).

Family: surface-to-air. Country: USA. Agency: Western Electric.
