Born to a family of doctors. Graduated from secondary school 1964. His parents wanted him to become a physician, but his passion was engineering. In 1964 he was admitted to the Mechanics School of the Leningrad Institute of Military Technology. After graduating he was directed to work at the Arsenal Bureau, where he worked on the liquid and gas dynamics of underwater ballistic missile launches. He worked his way up from senior technician to the bureau's General Designer. Author of nearly 60 patents. Candidate of the Technical Sciences, professor at the Baltic State Technical University ("Voyenmekh"), member of the Tsiolkovsky Space Academy, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Space Council, member of the Nevsky Bastion military technology journal's editorial committee.
