Fourth and final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. Only shuttle mission authorized prior to shuttle retirement not to go to the ISS - therefore with no means of space rescue should the heat shield be damaged during ascent to orbit.
AKA: Atlantis;HST-SM4;STS-122A. Launched: 2009-05-11. Returned: 2009-05-24. Number crew: 7 . Duration: 12.90 days.
Flight originally planned as STS-122 and to have been flown by the Columbia orbiter prior to the Columbia disaster and to have flown in April 2004. No crew had been named at the time of the loss of Columbia.

Hubble Servicing Mission SM-4. Atlantis rendezvoused with the Hubble space observatory, grappled it with the RMS arm, and secured it in the payload bay at 18:12 GMT on 13 May. After repairs and upgrades over four EVA's, the satellite was released at 12:57 GMT on 19 May. Atlantis landed at Edwards AFB at 15:39 GMT on 24 May.
